Vegan Drinks Philly 4.20.10!

4.20.10 @ The Belgian Cafe
21st and Green 7-11 PM

For vegans, vegetarians, and veg-curious:

Time again for Vegan Drinks Philly! This month we are back again at The Belgian Cafe, due to the overwhelming positive response from attendees who came in February. This is a great location with lots of great beer, room for mingling, and awesome vegan hot wings!

This location has plenty of space, so be sure and invite your friends. Vegan Drinks is a great place to introduce nonvegans to veganism. It's also a great place for new vegans, or vegans looking to become more active in the community and meet new friends.

++++++

FYI

Philadelphia just gave birth to a new vegan/animal rights/social justice group, Peace Advocacy Network. They are celebrating their recent formation with a vegan champagne toast and dinner at Mi Lah Vegetarian on 4.15.10 from 6-9 PM. The cost is $25 per person if you pay now, or $35 at the door and includes a glass of champagne, an appetizer, and an entree. There are only a few spaces left, so be sure and head over to peaceadvocacynetwork.org if you're interested in reserving a seat.

Peace Advocacy Network is spearheading several campaigns in Philadelphia including working towards a ban on horse-drawn carriages and creating new vegans with the Vegan Pledge. Be sure and check them out. I know they need volunteers if anyone is interested!

@ Cantina Dos Segundos
931 N. 2nd Street

You've heard of Vegan Drinks Philly and may have also heard of the new Vegan Cocktails Philly, but now you can check out both groups at the same time for a good cause- helping Chenoa Manor raise the additional $75K needed to complete the $200K barn renovation.

Please join us for a night of cocktails and vegan food. The more you spend, the more we raise for Chenoa Manor ;)

Here's the special vegan menu (in addition to their regular vegan menu):

Warm Asparagus and Quinoa Salad - vegan
with arugula, red and yellow grape tomatoes, red onion, tempeh croutons, sherry vinaigrette

Vegan Chorizo and Potato Burrito - vegan
With cactus escabeche, pico verde, lettuce, rice, and beans

Spinach and Huitlacoche Enchiladas -vegan
with roasted squash mole, vegan crema, and pumpkin seeds

Spanish Pocha Beans Tinga - vegan

*just to be clear- the restaurant also has a "vegetarian" menu and "vegetarian" items on the menu. Those items are NOT VEGAN and contain animal secretions. Please be sure that what you are ordering is indeed vegan so there is no confusion. VDP only encourages the consumption of purely vegan food out of respect for animals.

Chenoa Manor Barn Update

You might remember Vegan Drinks Philly raising money for our local animal sanctuary, Chenoa Manor, in an effort to rebuild their 200-year-old barn. We needed to raise 200K to rebuild it and we’re happy to announce that 125K have already been raised! This has allowed Chenoa Manor to begin phase one of the barn restoration, which will be completed in a few weeks.

The bad news is that phase two needs to be finished in the next six months or it’s possible that the barn will be irreparable! So, all we need to raise is the remaining 75K, which should be too hard, right?? Vegan Drinks Philly is trying to make it easy to help contribute to the cause with the following two events (and of course you can always donate on Chenoa Manor's website):

Vegan Drinks Philly MEETS Vegan Cocktails Philly

Vegan Cocktails Philly meets Vegan Drinks Philly
@ Cantina Dos Segundos 3.10.10 6-1 am

AND ALSO...

Menu selections!

While Earth, Bread + Brewery is not a vegan restaurant, they do have some vegan offerings to snack upon while enjoying your vegan drinks. The choices are as follows:

Olives
Wheatberry Salad
Salads (without cheese or caesar dressing)
White Bean Dip
Edamame
Flatbreads (without cheese or pesto)

Vegan Beers:

FreeTheHikers*
Six Day Bitter

*EB+B will be hosting a month-long fund raiser for the families of Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal - three Americans that have been detained in a prison in Iran since July 31, 2009. (Josh graduated from Cheltenham High School). A 13oz glass is $5 - with $1 being contributed, a 20oz glass is $6 - with $.50 being contributed. Earth will also add additional money per glass sold to the fund. Please visit their website for more information about them and sign the petition.

For more information regarding vegan alcohol, please visit Barnivore.

There has been quite a bit of feedback concerning the availability of vegan foods at the new location. I think it's time to make something clear- Vegan Drinks Philly is not a food-related event. It's not a dinner. It's not a potluck. It's about vegans, vegetarians, and veg-curious getting connected with like-minded people. Sorry to sound so harsh, but there are PLENTY of other vegan potlucks and dinners if that's what you're looking for.

If you're only concerned about eating, then this event is not for you. Please visit vegandrinks.org to read the purpose of Vegan Drinks events and if you have any comments regarding it, please direct them to info@vegandrinks.org. That being said, I'm actively working to increase the vegan offerings available and the more people who come to these events, the more leverage we have :)

Helping Haiti!

Since we're not raising any money at this month's event, I'd like to direct you all to give what you can to help the people of Haiti. Food For Life Global is going to begin sending vegan food to Haiti within the next week and your contribution of only $25 can deliver 100 vegan meals to the helpless in Haiti. The situation in Haiti is nothing less than utterly devastating and if you aren't exactly aware of the situation, please watch this video clip of a recent interview from Democracy Now! Please give whatever you can, these people have NOTHING and desperately need our help.

Vegan Drinks Philly 2.24.10!

Just to make everyone aware, the next Vegan Drinks Philly will be on 2.24.10 at the Belgian Cafe from 7-11 PM. More details to be announced in the coming weeks!

Vegan Drinks Philly 1.28.10!

Don't be fooled by imitators! This is the PREMIER and ORIGINAL vegan social event in Philadelphia!

The first Vegan Drinks started up in NYC in May 2008. Since then, Vegan Drinks have been popping up in cities across the nation. So, what exactly is Vegan Drinks? Here's the lowdown from VeganDrinks.org:

"Vegan Drinks is a monthly social networking* event for people interested in promoting veganism and advocating for animal rights. Vegan Drinks’ mission is to bring together a diverse group of people—from cupcake aficionados to animal lawyers to veg*ns of all stripes in between—to build new coalitions and promote the sharing of resources. Vegan Drinks is for newbies and oldies. All we expect is an interest in animal rights, veganism and the pursuit of after-work fun. Show up and introduce yourself, pass around business cards (if you've got ‘em) and embarrass yourself at least once an hour.

*Although we think love is grand, Vegan Drinks is not a singles’ event. But, if you happen to meet the love of your life at Vegan Drinks, don't forget to invite us to the wedding!"

Vegan Drinks Philly took root here in Philadelphia, in January 2009 and has been going strong every month ever since! THIS IS OUR ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY! So, put down the leaflets and sit back to network and socialize with like-minded individuals. Together we can cultivate ideas, spread the vegan message, and work towards our one common goal- ANIMAL LIBERATION.

This will be our second event at our newest location:

Earth, Bread + Brewery (upstairs lounge)
7136 Germantown Ave (plenty of free parking)
Philadelphia, PA 19119
**no cover**all ages**bring friends (especially non-vegans)**
7-11 PM

Please bring non-vegans, or "veg-curious," as this is a great way to introduce people to other vegans and show them what a happy and fun bunch we all are! The last event was well-attended, but it's always nice when we get a higher turnout. So, if you haven't been in a while, consider making it out!

Also, if you haven't done so already, be sure and head on over to vegandrinksphilly.com and click "subscribe" on the right-hand side so you'll get an email alerting you to all future Vegan Drinks Philly events!!

See you there!

If you have any questions, as always, contact ed@vegandrinksphilly.com
